Christians and Zen Buddhists?

Do you think that Christians can also be Zen Buddhists?

As I understand it, most Zen Buddhists do not worship Buddha as a god. The practice of Buddhist meditation is exactly like some of the most spiritual Christians’ description of prayer without words. Breath prayer has been an ancient practice for Christians.

How many passages in the Bible speak of mindfulness, of staying awake and aware? How many tools does modern Christianity as practiced by most protestants in America really given us to be able to do that?

Zen Buddhists, do you think that Christians belief in a God by necessity means that they (we) can’t also practice Zen Buddhism?

I just finished the book, "Mindfulness in Plain English".

It talks about Vipassana Meditation as the way to "Enlightenment".

The author defines Enlightenment as full, persistent, unbroken, 24×7 "Mindfulness".

He says it is totally doable, for anyone, meaning it does NOT require spiritual or religious or mystical or "new age" mumbo jumbo.

Just practice. A particular practice. The meditation PRACTICE known as Vipassana. As taught by The Buddha 2,500 years ago, and fully refined through today.

And it is hard work, but it is just work. So anyone can do it, and achieve Enlightenment, and radically and dramatically change their life for the better forever.

And all that other stuff is either total BS, or just side-effects of Meditation.

Can anyone and everyone achieve Enlightenment by practicing Vipassana Meditation??

Lama Surya Das lists the following among his reasons:
It’d be great to have a president for once who practiced right speech, right actions, right intentions and right livelihood, as Buddha taught.
Buddhist meditation and mindfulness training is good for both physical and mental health.
Buddhist practices of mindful anger management and nonviolent conflict resolution could make him an enlightened leader
Buddha was the world’s first ecological leader and protector of animals as well as human beings.
(Obama could rename 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue “The Green House”)
Buddha has for 2500 years taught change and inclusivity.

The Buddha set forth a systematic approach by which dedicated humans could

pull themselves out of suffering and achieve the final goal of liberation. The

Eightfold Path offers ways to burn up all past demerits, avoid accumulating new

demerits, and build up merit for a favorable rebirth. Perfection of the path means

final escape from the cycle of death and rebirth, into the peace of nirvana.

The required conduct and attitudes of the 8-fold path are:

Right understanding of reality

Right thoughts and motives

Right speech

Right action (including avoiding stealing, lying, sexual misconduct and intoxicants)

Right livelihood

Right effort

Right mindfulness

Right meditation

Do these requirements seem hard to you? Unnecessary?

How do they compare with the teachings of your own religion?

Obesity ?
93% of the cases of fat people and obesity comes from the genes. It is hereditary.
Scientists are very close to discovering the Fat and Obese gene, and will soon find a permanent cure for this !!
Even "The Buddha" yes was fat. But for him too, it was in his genetic makeup. He inherited this gene from his parents. Although, he was one of the very few people in history that overcome this gene. He went on a 7 year fast from food, in hopes of more quickly getting rid of all his negative defilements(impatience, anger, intolerance, etc.) but he came to the realization that this happens through Mindfulness Meditation, not through starving himself !
He did through his 7 years fast, lost over 385 pounds. That is why many see statues of a Fat Buddha and also see statues of a more healthy Buddha, thinner, wholesome and healthier physically. The last two-thirds of his life he was thin and healthy.

I use to be 268 lbs.thru Southbeach Diet lost I 168 pounds & exercise 1 hr day!
